Steppingstone School for Gifted Education is an independent non-profit, 501.c.3, elementary day school, Gr K-8, for gifted children, founded in 1981.  We believe every child deserves a satisfying, challenging and joyful learning experience.  We differ from most other independent schools, even those that serve the gifted, in that each child’s curriculum is individualized to accommodate his/her asynchronous academic development.  Students are in classrooms with their age peers while their academics are learned at whatever level provides appropriate challenge.  For example, a 5 year old who has been reading since age 3 will not have reading lessons but will engage in literature instead; a 2nd grader who already knows the math curriculum through Gr-3 will receive math-4 instruction …  and so on.  Enrichment classes are also offered after school, Saturdays and throughout the summer.

Special programs include the Summer Music Academy for strings and piano (or harpsichord) and the SMART (Steppingstone MAgnetic Resonance Training) Center, a laboratory research program for middle school and high school and the only one of its kind in the country and probably the world.

I am struggling to find a kindergarten for my son next year. We are in the Lansing area. Do you have any suggestions of programs around this area? Thank you for your time.

I’m sorry, we are, in general, unfamiliar with programs in Lansing. However, we do have several school lists on this website (See our “Education of Gifted Children” menu for these). Perhaps one of these lists includes a school in your area. Another good resource for you might be the Michigan Association for Gifted Children (MAGC) http://migiftedchild.org/. Good luck!
